How To Make Yourself Productive During Corona / COVID-19 Pandemic Quarantine/Lockdown.
Hello
friends!
Today
we all are facing a threat called COVID-19 caused due to corona virus. This
virus has forced us to shut down our daily activities and is affecting us in
ways unimaginable. Each and every one of us is affected adversely shutting us
inside our houses and ceasing our activities like going to job, meeting
parents, relatives and friends, traveling, dining out, shopping etc. We are confined
in a room and are unable to get out even if we want to. I would like to thank
you for it because you staying at home is helping saving lives of yourself and
others as well. Each one of you is contributing to it.
Thank you.
But
this so called self-quarantine or home confinement or house arrest maybe
frustrating to you. Suddenly ceasing all activities and sitting at home is
driving many crazy. Most of us are worrying about managing finances and running
business. In this dark time, I have good news for you- “It’s not going to last
forever”. We all are going to win over it and make the future brighter. But one
question remains though, “How are you going to make yourself productive sitting
at home and stop yourself from driving insane?”
So
friends, I have an amazing solution to this problem. Sit back and read
carefully to what I am about to say.
Ways To Make Yourself Productive During Corona/COVID-19 Pandemic:
1)
Identify
your problem: When you are forced to be in a physical confinement, you are at
mercy of your mind. Thoughts come and go in your mind constantly and you cannot
stop it. Only this time you’re more aware of these thoughts. If most of the
thoughts are morally wrong then you can find yourself in frustration, angry and
worst case scenario violent. You may end up hurting yourself and people around
you. So our focus on solving this problem is to deal with our physical and
mental issues.
2)
Start
exercising physically and mentally:
Daily you spend
certain amount of calories performing our daily activities. But now you are
siting are home either working on laptop or watching TV or performing indoor
activities like cleaning the house, washing clothes. This does not help to burn
enough calories which you usually do. So start exercising daily. It can be
lifting weights, jogging or running on treadmill, doing yoga, dance or anything
involving vigorous physical activity for atleast 30 min daily indoors.
Similarly exercise of mind is also necessary. Actually it would not be wrong to
say that mental exercise is more important than physical.
You may wonder what
is a mental exercise . The answer is pretty simple meditation is your mental
exercise. But not just any meditation. There are thousands of meditation
techniques and all are effective in their own ways. But I would recommend you
to do a simple and most effective meditation technique called “ Ana pan sati”
which is ancient Indian language Pali and it translates to “being mindful of
breathing”.
I will explain this
in little detail. You sit in most comfortable position you would like. Relax
yourself, close your eyes and bring your entire attention to nostrils. At your
nostrils, you will observe your every breath inhaling and exhaling slowly
without intervening with the breathing pattern. Initially you will find it very
difficult to keep your mind focused on breathing because your mind is like a
monkey. It will wander away jumping from thought after thought and you will
lose attention from breathing. Suddenly you’ll realize you have to focus on
breathing and you will bring your mind back to observing breathing. You’ve to
bring your wandering mind back to breathing again and again; may the thought be
very tempting or disturbing but you have to bring your focus back to breathing.
Initially you will find a shorter span of attention over breathing but
eventually with practice it will increase.
Now you may ask me
how is this going to help me maintain my mental health.
Again the answer is
pretty simple. But first you must know a fact that our mind is trained to react
to everything going around us. From birth till death, your mind is constantly
non-stop reacting to each and everything going around. When you are confined at
home your mind starts getting frustrated and starts reacting more due to
physical confinement. By doing this meditation practice you will control your
reaction easily which you usually cannot do. The practice of bringing your mind
back to breathing is a kind of exercise which trains our mind to control
reactions and not necessarily react to each and every situation around us. This
ensures that we do not react much too any emotions like anger, frustration,
depression and jealousy. This exercise of mind will ensure you mental health
and maintain happiness and peace of mind. This eventually will contribute to
better decision making in this period of crisis.
3)
Learn
something new:
I would
recommend you all learn something new. I will tell you what I am learning. I am
learning to cook delicious food recipes. You can learn anything. It could be
cooking, singing, any musical instrument, shooting videos, explore the
internet, learn a new language and the list is never ending. Now you have time
to learn something new then do it. This will keep your mind engaged and
obviously it will contribute immensely in your productivity.
4)
Organize
your daily schedule:
I have observed that
now all are at home so nobody is paying attention to their respective daily
schedule. People are up late night and get up late in the morning. The entire
routine is disturbed. This affects your health as well as your morale. You may
be feeling low on energy. The disturbed schedule is to blame. So I recommend
you all to start your day as early as possible and organize it in a good way.
You can make a time table on a paper and stick it next to mirror in the
bathroom. It will remind you of how to begin your day and guide you well. There
should be a separate section on when to use mobile should also be mentioned. Mobile
phones consume our major chunk of time without us realizing and bring our
productivity down.
5)
Spend
quality time with yourself and family:
All these years you
have been complaining that you don’t have enough time to spend it with family,
relatives and friends. Now you are locked with them in the house so sit with
them, talk to them, play games with them and help each other to keep your
surrounding clean and tidy. Clean house and loving caring people around us will
make this lockdown look an easy task. They will support you in this crisis and
you should return the favor too.
This crisis has given
us an opportunity to grow ourselves in territories which we have never explored
in life. This crisis is teaching us to be more responsible towards our
families, community and nature. I am pretty sure when this will get over, every
one of us will emerge a better person.
